That year they released three demos, catching the attention of the fledgling German label Shithouse Records, which released Beherit’s “Dawn of Satan’s Millennium” pic disc EP later that same year. Shithouse, which later became Turbo Music, commissioned the band’s debut album, but a dispute between band and label ultimately led Turbo to release a compilation, instead, under the name “The Oath of Black Blood”. A proper debut album would not appear until 1993, with the release of “Drawing Down the Moon”. However, Beherit did enter the studio in 1990 with the intention of recording an album, but it was discarded and the tapes went missing until 2011 when drummer Sodomatic Slaughter unearthed them for release. While its historic value is undeniable, “At the Devil’s Studio” is a remarkable recording in its own right. Like Beherit’s other pre-DDTM recordings, “At the Devil’s Studio” is a visceral explosion of bestial carnage. In fact, most of the tracks here are re-recorded versions of songs from the “Demonomancy” demo or else earlier renderings of tracks that appeared on the “Down There…” demo released in 1991 under the name The Lord Diabolus. There are three songs (“At the Devil’s Churns,” “Whores of Belial,” and the instrumental rehearsal track that opens the album) that don’t appear elsewhere in the Beherit catalog. With clearer production than the “Demonomancy” demo that preceded it, “At the Devil’s Studio” is in some respects a stronger recording, more in line with the band’s subsequent output though still possessed of the same frenzied aggression that defined the early Beherit releases. After its initial release in 2011, “At the Devil’s Studio” has remained out of print. Following on the heels NWN!’s recent reissue of “The Oath of Black Blood” 30 years after its original release, NWN! is honored to reissue “At the Devil’s Studio” in its 10th anniversary year.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Dai-The-Advent-TAPE-53396-1-1678734358.jpg?v=1778036393
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Dai-The-Advent-DOUBLE-LP-GATEFOLD-COLORED-53397-1-1678734499.jpg?v=1778036402
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Saltas-Mors-Salis-_96-Opus-I-LP-53417-1-1678743887.jpg?v=1778036485
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Vengeance-Sorcery-Witchdance-Rising-If-None-Will-Call-the-Devil-s-Blood-LP-53418-1-1678744117.jpg?v=1778036476
yxxan-satanic-fortification-overbalance-inverterat-korstag-lp
Yxxan - Satanic Fortification Overbalance / Inverterat Korståg - LP

First press of 200 copies all on gray blue vinyl.
Comes with 3mm jacket and 12" insert.
Tracks 1-6: "Satanic Fortification Overbalance" demo 2020
Tracks 7-10: "Inverterat korståg" demo 2019

Both demos of Swedish one-woman project Yxxan compiled on one LP. Originally released on cassette by the band in 1989, this record is a milestone in both eastern European metal and 80’s thrash in general. Lightning fast and deftly executed, SARCASM’s attack recalls the best of pure 80s speed with a tonal grounding in classic heavy metal. The guitar work of Blaznik and Hudobivnik is razor sharp, with unreal twin harmonies and truly mind-bending solos (see “The Krueger Story”, for example). With each successive release, he has continued to perfect the baleful, macabre sound for which his project has come to be known, and his new release, “Consumption,” which has been three years in the making, is the most fully realized expression of this sound. Primarily used in two ways, consumption can mean the act or process of consuming or a progressive wasting away of the body, especially from pulmonary tuberculosis. Both meanings are thematically at play on this album, which recounts the tale of Mercy Brown, an obscure piece of folklore from Rhode Island, the band’s place of origin. During the 19th century, tuberculosis—known as “consumption” for the way it consumed its victims’ bodies—spread aggressively through New England. Seeing households ravaged by the illness, many came to believe that some victims remained partially animated, sucking vitality from the living—a sort of Puritanical twist on the Old World vampire legend. To protect against this, family members would exhume their loved ones’ bodies and cut them open to examine their organs. The discovery of fresh, liquid blood in the heart was, to their superstitious minds, a tell-tale sign of the corpse’s undead nature. As a banishing ritual, they removed and burned the “fresh” organs they found. In the mid-1880s, consumption struck the family of George Brown. His wife and eldest daughter died first, and, in 1891, his son Edwin and daughter Mercy fell ill. After Mercy succumbed to the disease, George, persuaded by local villagers, allowed the exhumation of his deceased family. With onlookers gathered round, they opened Mercy’s body and finding a blood-filled heart, concluded that the 19-year-old girl was, indeed, the source of the disease. They burnt her heart and liver, the ashes of which were mixed into a tonic and given to Edwin as a cure, though he died two months later. Finely tuned to this this conceptual narrative, the music on “Consumption” is stripped down and austere yet confident, owing the mastery of The Corpse’s songwriting. Coalescing around the steely persistence of the drums, the tangled storm of melodic bass riffs weave through the tracks like a burning filament conducting the charged current of the guitar. The Corpse’s deep, miasmic bellows hang like fog above the torrential fury of the instrumentation, haunting the tracks. The composition is dynamic, chiseled riffs pieced together in perfect agreement to construct complex melodic structures amid shifting tempos. Even on the first listen, the meticulous attention to detail that went into the creation of this album is manifest. Every element is deliberately arranged and drawn together to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts, an impressive feat given Cemetery Lights’ reliance on only the most basic ingredients: drums, bass, guitar, and vocals, recorded with few overdubs and minimal overdrive. For those who already worship at the altar of Cemetery Lights, this album will certainly exceed all expectations. And for everyone else, “Consumption” is the high-water mark of the Cemetery Lights catalog and thus an ideal entry point for further exploration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Cemetery-Lights-Consumption-LP-COLORED-58223-1-1712174599.jpg?v=1778054674
conqueror-nuclear-cult-supremacy-lp-colored
Conqueror - Nuclear.Cult.Supremacy - LP COLORED

Though they only released a handful of tracks, Conqueror’s sound defined an entire subgenre of black metal. Each side contains an atmospheric intro followed by a bludgeoning original composition. Additionally, the MLP closes with a cover of “In the Shrines of the Kingly Dead” by Treblinka/Tiamat, a song perfectly suited for Dreadful Relic in both style and substance. As always, themes of Lovecraftian dread and Hyborian valor permeate the lyrics, but Dreadful Relic’s inspiration on this MLP comes not only from the terrestrial and mythical but also the celestial, where cosmic scenes play out, precisely and predictably, in the theater of night, as constellations crawl across the darkened sky, their relative formations unchanged across millennia. Prehistoric photons dispatched from inconceivable distances absorbed in the eyes of those condemned to wallow and toil on this spinning sphere. Varvar was active from 1986 to 1990 but disbanded and reunited three years later to record their first album, only to split up again a few years after its release. With a heavy metal melodic sensibility infused with elements of speed metal, this album is perfectly situated at the nexus of those two genres. Relatively little is known about the band, but owing to both its obscurity and the uniqueness of the sound, this album has long been a Holy Grail of Russian metal among collectors. The name “???????” is a reference to The Holy Martyr Barbarus (“Varvara”), a savage criminal in the first century A.D. who renounced his life of theft and murder, seeking to repent for his wicked deeds. After confessing his sins, Barbarus took flight from society, lived naked and alone in the forest for twelve years before being killed by hunters and subsequently canonized in the Orthodox Church. Similar themes permeate the lyrics on “The Beastly Abyss Will Kill You,” yet the primal aggression of the music stands in stark contrast to the holy messages in the lyrics. The riffs, heavy and melodious and sheathed in brittle distortion, supply power and momentum while Anatoly Stepanov projects his impassioned vocals in a gravelly voice reminiscent of Lemmy or Maurizio "Angus" Bidoli of Fingernails. There is nothing extraneous or unnecessary on this album. It is unadulterated—a pure distillation of the raw components of heavy metal. Varvar could have achieved greater success during their existence, but they broke up just before a number of shows were scheduled in Russia and abroad, including an opening slot for Aria that was canceled after Aria’s manager died under suspicious circumstances. For decades, “The Beastly Abyss Will Kill You” was nearly unknown outside of Russia. Because the original LP is exceedingly rare and few made their way outside of the country, only the most ardent underground record collectors were aware of it, much less able to obtain physical copies. While much ink has been spilled about titans like DEICIDE, CANNIBAL CORPSE and MORBID ANGEL, little recognition has been granted to a group whose interpretation of the genre remains largely unacknowledged at the international level: Russia’s GRAVESIDE. Formed in Tula, Tula Oblast in 1990 under the name Surgery (????????) and adopting the moniker GRAVESIDE in 1991, the band became pioneers in the nascent Russian death metal world, alongside Moscow’s DEATH VOMIT, NECROCANNIBAL and PHANTASM. While paying homage to the brilliant works of early DEICIDE, GRAVESIDE’s intricate song structures, expert musicianship and haunting keyboard work places them in a distinctive category, distancing themselves from the mere clones of the Morrisound style. Helmkamp’s commanding voice rises above the fray: “Oft spoken of only in whispers/The true embodiment is enshrined/Its roots reach down through slumbered soils/Swift branches scrape the skies.” And so begins “Dawn Bringer,” the second of three pre-planned albums by Kansas City, Missouri black death legends Order From Chaos. Originally planned as a 12” MLP on the Dutch label Shivadarshana Records, the label insisted on adding more material and tacked on two live tracks—known as the “Pain Lengthens Time” EP, though it was never independently released—and a cover of Voivod’s “War and Pain” taken from the “Jericho Trumpet” EP. By the time it came out, in 1995, the label ditched the vinyl edition and only issued it on CD. Perhaps due to the comparatively limited nature of the original release, “Dawn Bringer” has sometimes been overshadowed by the band’s other full-lengths, but it is a masterful album nonetheless. Order From Chaos is the sort of band that can’t be fully understood through examination of any single element of their output; one must appreciate the composite sum of their body of work, and “Dawn Bringer” is a crucial part the band’s unassailable catalog, capturing their transition from the militaristic barbarism of “Stillbirth Machine” to their esoteric and intricate swan song, “An Ending in Fire.” The band’s themes came into focus on “Dawn Bringer.” Helmkamp’s occult vision looked inside, isolating and exalting the self, whereas Keller, who shared the lyrical and thematic responsibilities, turned his gaze outward and upward, drawn to the celestial and cosmic. The iconic mutation of the Vitruvian Man design featured on “Stillbirth Machine” evolved into the “Conqueror of Fear” symbol adorning the cover of “Dawn Bringer,” representing the philosophical core of Order From Chaos: “He is the refuge towards which you crawl/Yet as poison fear has tainted your wine/Let fly the arrow marking you for death/He laughs- He represents foreverness.” Helmkamp dove deeper into this concept in his later lyrics, refining and expanding it, but the first coherent emanations of the Conqueror of Fear philosophy appear on “Dawn Bringer” during the second movement of the “Tenebrae/Draconis” track. One also hears Order From Chaos’ sonic evolution on “Dawn Bringer,” as several of the songs appear as reworked versions of tracks from earlier releases (i.e. “Labyrinthine Whispers,” which appeared with different lyrics as “Crimes Against the State” from the “Crushed Infamy” demo, “Megalomania” from the “Will to Power” EP was reworked to become “Ophiuchus Rex (He Who Plays with the Serpents),” and “Tenebrae” incorporated riffs from “Apocalyptic Visions” from the “Inhumanities” demo). Additionally, closing out the album is an extended, re-recorded version of “Webs of Perdition,” one of their defining tracks that first appeared on the “Will to Power” EP. On “Dawn Bringer,” however, the song ends with a stormy guitar solo panning back and forth in the background, disintegrating into noise as Keller ripped the strings off and tore at the pickups with a screwdriver. There’s an increased degree of complexity on display in the material on this album as well, especially on the song “Tenebrae/The Sign Draconis,” an eight-and-a-half-minute epic comprised of three segments—a compositional tool that would carry over to the band’s final album. This new reissue, which marks the first time “Dawn Bringer” has been released as a standalone vinyl edition (it previously only appeared in the “Frozen in Steel” box set from 2014), will hopefully elevate the album’s stature, firmly positioning it on the same plane as the band’s other full-lengths.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Order-From-Chaos-Dawn-Bringer-LP-Gatefold-58231-1-1712176535.jpg?v=1778054698
cemetery-lights-the-underworld-lp
Cemetery Lights - The Underworld - LP

With its two demo EPs from 2018, Cemetery Lights rightfully gained the attention of the black metal underground for its atavistic approach that melded the sounds of various influences from decades-gone-by to produce an early body of work that somewhat resembled a newly-discovered series of recordings from the vault of Unisound Records. Within a few months, Cemetery Lights released its second demo, “The Church on the Island,” which offered a somewhat more expanded glimpse of the full palette of the band’s inspirations and increased anticipation for what its first full-length would bring. Approximately one year later, this debut album is realized with the release of “The Underworld” on Nuclear War Now! Productions. Through a series of demos and full-length cassette releases, the band painstakingly carved out a place in the underground landscape that has been largely untouched and uncorrupted. Stylistically eccentric, Oksennus’ music is a controlled departure from the constraints of genre, and, yet, the band nevertheless remains properly steeped in tradition. With this new album, Oksennus’ ambitious tendencies are on prominent display. “Kolme Toista” is as bold an artistic proclamation as one could expect in metal without stretching the fabric of the genre so thin as to leave it threadbare. With nearly a decade of work behind them, the members of Oksennus are proficient and meticulous about the presentation of their ideas, and this album showcases the merit in their approach. As with all of Oksennus’ work, the album cover features the austere and abstract style of illustration that is an aesthetic hallmark of the band’s vision. The album’s title means “Three Others,” but, in Finnish, it is also a play on words, simultaneously evoking the number “thirteen” (“kolmetoista”). Intentionality and purpose characterize every aspect of this release, and the wordplay of the title is no exception. The album consists of a single 39-minute composition, broken into three 13-minute movements, seamlessly woven together, guiding the listener through a sprawling array of mercurial states of consciousness, calling to mind the complex compositions by fellow NWN! act Chaos Echoes. The album begins joltingly—a frenzy of ecstatic guitars, cycling and clashing, order and chaos held in restrained and tenuous equipoise. The drums and bass, active and aggressive, accentuate the commotion while providing musculature for the composition, as the vocals call out above the fray, invocations of of dark intent. It is disorienting—a warped, whirling, death dervish hymn. As the first movement ends, the compositional filaments become increasingly unraveled, the elements broken down, splayed, ripe for examination. The second movement is more unified; almost hypnotic, but melodically complex. Notes contrast and collide, and although the passage is rhythmically consistent, the sequences of melody never quite repeat. The track slows to near stasis, like atoms as liquid freezes to solid. At the 26-minute mark, the track erupts into unbounded territory. Vocals spill over the mix, summoning and directing the music, which is increasingly freeform as the final movement gets under way. The vocals die out, and the drums dominate the track, with the guitars receding, forming a roiling undercurrent of distortion. Extraneous sounds produced by an array of sources, including a number of unusual instruments (piano, trumpet, accordion, harmonica, kantele) emerge to fill the space and lull the listener into a nearly transcendental state as the third movement winds down. Before the album ends, however, the blissful cacophony of the third movement is interrupted by the same frenetic force with which the album began. Indeed, the same drum pattern that opens “Kolme Toista” recurs to provide the foundation for the confounding mania of the final minute of the track before suddenly disintegrating into the welcome serenity of silence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Oksennus-Kolme-Toista-CD-58393-1-1712771584.jpg?v=1778055383
summon-fire-turns-everything-black-devourer-of-souls-lp-colored
Summon - Fire Turns Everything Black… / Devourer of Souls - LP COLORED

Regere Sinister is Finnish black metal for those who survived the Infernal Storm of Evil to witness Reflections of the Solstice. The project’s country of origin was hostile to metal music at the time, with the prevailing Iron Curtain political climate essentially banning western music from entering the Eastern Bloc. Metalheads of the era had to rely on dubbed tapes smuggled from the west, which were not in wide circulation. After trading a few Uriah Heap tapes for his first guitar, the Piff played in a number of bands in the nascent Sofia metal scene throughout the 80s. The Piff soon learned to play the drums as well, inspired by a negative experience he had working with a particularly unreliable drummer. This mastery of several instruments would prove crucial to his later work as EXHUMATOR. An early lineup featuring the Piff and guitarist Malkiya (aka Dobrin Filipov) would choose the moniker DICTATOR in 1989. Their first performance was at a Bulgarian metal festival in February 1990. The group was well-received, being one of the first extreme metal groups from Bulgaria. Two demos were recorded (according to the Piff, the masters for these demos are lost). DICTATOR went through a large number of lineup changes (including about eight different guitarists) before the Piff parted ways with the group at the end of 1991. EXHUMATOR was born in the wake of this decision. The Piff handled the drums, guitars and vocals for EXHUMATOR and brought his former bandmate Malkiya to play bass. Blending a mix of classic 80s thrash/first wave black metal with the death metal explosion of the time, the inaugural work of EXHUMATOR evokes the early recordings of TORR, MASTER’S HAMMER, and early RUNNING WILD. The first two full lengths were recorded during the same four day marathon recording session in 1991, with the first featuring songs initially written in the late 80s as DICTATOR. Both records would not see a release until 1993. NWN! Productions has worked closely with the group on every detail of this release, including the lyrics translated from Bulgarian to English. Guided by JG’s laborious research of the peoples that once populated the region in and around the land presently known as Portugal, Caixão’s music is suffused with Mediterranean mysticism. JG’s reverence for his land and its psychogeographical character is one feature that sets Caixão apart, especially as the regional traits that once defined the various styles of black metal emerging from different parts of the world have eroded, leaving the scene—like the world, in general—largely devoid of the distinctive, localized qualities that once made it so compelling. With this new album, JG draws upon the mythological figure Melqart, the patron god of Tyre, one of the most prominent city-states in the Phoenician diaspora, described by Ernest Renan as “a city of ruins, built out of ruins.” As Phoenician culture spread throughout the Mediterranean, so, too, did Melqart’s legacy. While there are few extant artistic representations of Melqart, and many details have been lost to time, he is believed to be the antecedent to the Greek half-deity and hero Herakles (known to the Romans as Hercules), whose cult supplanted Melqart’s as the Greek empire ascended to global prominence. The nexus between these two figures served as the inspiration for Caixão’s sophomore album, “Herakles/Melqart.” In particular, Herakles’ 12 labors—assigned as punishment after Hera, jealous of the son born from Zeus’s infidelity, sent Herakles into a fit of insanity during which he murdered his wife and children—illustrate the manner in which Herakles’s persona subsumed attributes of Melqart as the reach of the Greek empire swept out across the Phoenician world. JG devotes a track to each of the 12 labors, from the Nemean Lion and the Hydra of Lerna, to the Augean stables, the Cretan Bull, and Cerberus. Indeed, one can hear when listening to this album how each track captures the essence of the corresponding Heraklean task. In doing so, Caixão demonstrates how within the black metal genre, perhaps more than any other form of music, mystical emanations of the ancient past converge with the nihilistic currents of the present day, forming a cultural through-line and highlighting the accretion of ideals that have, for millennia, undergirded the development of Western Civilization. Musically speaking, with this album, JG continues to expand the frontier of Caixão’s sonic palette, incorporating miscellaneous sound sources, such as field recordings and traditional folk instruments. But Caixão’s core identity remains unchanged—a syncretic amalgam of styles deftly combined to produce a distinctive strain of Iberian black metal. JG showcases the breadth of his musical knowledge, demonstrating his penchant for methodically picking and choosing only those elements that contribute to the creation of an atmosphere appropriately evocative of his subject matter. “Herakles/Melqart” reflects the most complete and thoughtful Caixão recording to date, a testament to JG’s dedication to his craft and the exploratory nature of the project.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Caixao-Herakles-Melqart-LP-62973-1-1743511734.jpg?v=1778065566
araphel-old-comet-transition-cd
Araphel - Old Comet Transition - CD
Old Comet Transition by Araphel
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Araphel-Old-Comet-Transition-CD-63028-1-1743628422.jpg?v=1778065701
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Araphel-Old-Comet-Transition-TAPE-63027-1-1743628269.jpg?v=1778065708
wrathprayer-enkoimeterion-tape
Wrathprayer - Enkoimeterion - TAPE
Enkoimeterion by Wrathprayer

In this era of hyper-connection and instant gratification, the few artists who operate methodically, deliberately, and with painstaking attention to detail are those most likely to produce meritorious and enduring work. Though sparse, Wrathprayer’s output over the last 15 years has been among the most consistently impressive. Formed in 2006, the duo of guitarist and vocalist God of Torment and drummer Pestifer Fides released their demo in 2009 and, three years later, their debut full-length, The Sun of Moloch, co-released by NWN! and R. Forster’s Ross Bay Cult label. With that album, Wrathprayer, along with bands like Teitanblood and Necros Christos, helped usher in a wave of esoteric Black/Death metal—a novel synthesis of the two genres, infusing the plodding and intricate brutality of death metal with the occult disposition of black metal. Their last recordings were completed in 2014 but remained unreleased until they appeared on the 2017 split release with fellow Chileans Force of Darkness. After lying dormant for a decade, Wrathprayer now reemerge with a malevolent masterpiece entitled Enkoimeterion or the Enlivening of the Spiritual Heirs to Amalek, which finds the band advancing further toward the dark horizon of their sound. Written in 2019-2020 and recorded live in the studio two years later, Enkoimeterion, their second full-length release, showcases masterful composition and enhanced sound quality, far surpassing the band’s earlier work. The title refers to the abaton, or sleep chamber, located within the healing temples dedicated to the Greek god Asclepius, who visited the somnolent guests in their dreams to diagnose their illnesses and reveal the cures—a therapeutic approach to dreaming known as “incubation.” Wrathprayer’s invocation of such arcane concepts is neither haphazard nor ironic; their lyrics offer philosophical and metaphysical insight woven together with poetic fervor. Those inclined can pore over the body of lyrics presented here, untangling and deciphering the various themes, searching for the locus of meaning within. The music is likewise evocative and complex. After opening with a short symphonic excerpt from a work by the modern Chilean composer Prospero Bisquertt Prado, Wrathprayer descend into cavernous regions, immersed in a deep darkness illuminated by hallucinatory visions. Permeating the album is a striated network of bold labyrinthine riffs, sharp-edged and steeped in crimson, drawn taut across the roiling percussive frenzy of the drums. The six new tracks presented here coalesce into something greater, a composite whole that feels complete and expertly composed—an album that stands out amid the uninspired detritus produced in the last decade. As with Wrathprayer’s debut album, Enkoimeterion bears the imprimatur of one of the most visionary occult artists of the last century, Denis Forkas, whose cover art provides the final element, connecting the tripartite presentation of idea, imagery, and sound.

- J. Over the next nine years, the label released two subsequent Abigail full-lengths as well as several EPs and, most recently, the “Lord of Satan” compilation of some of the band’s earliest recordings. During this time, Abigail’s sound and themes have morphed to some degree, but their ability to successfully incorporate a consistent core of different influences has always remained. Whereas their earliest output afforded them status as one of the archetypal Japanese black metal bands, along with others like Sabbat and Sigh, later recordings exhibited a greater degree of speed metal, gritty street punk, and lyrics littered with sleazy sexual depravity.

With their fifth studio album, “The Final Damnation,” hereby released once again under the banner of Nuclear War Now!, Abigail has returned to a noticeable extent to the evil sound of their earliest recordings by increasing the black metal dosage in their satanic vaginal worship cocktail, all the while managing to maintain the rawness of later recordings that has endeared them to a new legion of gutter-dwelling deviants. Recorded at Ikebukuro Studio PENTA Tokyo between November 2015 and May 2016, “The Final Damnation” reintroduces mastermind Yasuyuki’s songwriting, throttling bass assault, trademark vocal braying and morally corrupt lyrics, which alternate between the primal evil of songs like “Open the Gates of Hell” and the crude debauchery of others like “Whisky Coke and Bitch.” As always, Abigail’s rhythmic foundation is cemented by Youhei’s unrelenting percussive onslaught, and it is accompanied by guitarist Jero’s venomous riffs and searing leads. The decision to commission veteran black metal artist Chris Moyen for the album’s cover art further exemplifies the band’s shift back to its roots, successfully conjuring the spirit of Bulldozer in the process and confirming that the original Black Metal Yakuza have not lost a step.

The Final Damnation by Abigail
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/Anael-from-Arcane-Fires-DOUBLE-LP-63015-1-1743621279.jpg?v=1778065684
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0952/9219/5113/files/W.A.I.L.-and-Misantropical-Painforest-Dare-to-Venture-Down-to-Earth...-LP-62988-1-1743544824.jpg?v=1778065607
oxiplegatz-worlds-and-worlds-lp-colored
Oxiplegatz - Worlds and Worlds - LP COLORED

NWN is proud to announce an official repress of Oxiplegatz's 2nd album from 1996. Some artists or albums that seemed so vital and important at their inception age poorly, appearing dull and derivative as the decades pass. On the other hand, there are many bands—often the most experimental and innovative—that were initially underappreciated, overlooked, or dismissed, but whose value becomes apparent only many years later. Oxiplegatz, a solo project by Alf Svensson—best known for his guitar work in Grotesque and At The Gates on their classic early releases—falls into this latter category. As At The Gates’ popularity grew following the release of “With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness” in 1993, Svensson felt the band was moving in a different direction than he envisioned and parted ways. His disenchantment was not limited to his former band but to the scene as a whole, which, he felt, was becoming increasingly predictable and formulaic. Bored by the familiar tropes of Satanism and evil that permeated black metal, Svensson found inspiration in the science fiction books and films he avidly consumed. “My interest,” Svensson explained in a 1997 interview, “lies in the future and man's evolution into homo sapiens stellaris. Oxiplegatz is dedicated to the unknown of the final frontier.” His first self-released Oxiplegatz album, “Fairytales,” from 1994, was largely culled from unused riffs he’d written for At The Gates. Although it was, as he put it, of “uneven quality,” it set the course, stylistically and thematically, for his second album, “Worlds and Worlds,” which followed two years later and more fully realized Svensson’s vision for the project. While bands like Voivod and Nocturnus were premised on science fiction themes, there were few, if any, black metal bands that drew upon similar concepts. Some of Svensson’s contemporaries such as Limbonic Art, Vulpecula, Circumventor, and a few others, had a celestial, atmospheric element to their music, but Oxiplegatz was much more fantastical, with lyrics depicting Earth’s demise, intergalactic exploration, and malevolent alien species. The cover was also a stark departure from the genre’s norms, featuring mid-1990s computer-generated art set against a white background. Though crude by comparison to contemporary digital design, the graphics for “Worlds and Worlds” were cutting edge and novel at the time and sharply contrasted with the predictably grim imagery that adorned most black metal releases. The music on the album was every bit as unusual as the cover art suggested. Driven by Svennson’s abrasive guitarwork and frenzied drum programming, symphonic keyboards, acoustic guitars, spoken word, and operatic vocals, both male and female, add depth and eccentricity to the album. While the technology Svensson employed made it feel dated in the decade or so after its release, as often happens with music, that effect has largely worn off at this point such that the album can once again be appreciated for its creative merit. “Worlds and Worlds” may have been too ambitious and radically unorthodox for most black metal fans in 1996, but with the benefit of hindsight, one can see now, nearly 30 years later, just how revolutionary it was. Indeed, Svensson’s Oxiplegatz albums were, in many ways, among the first to really expand the boundaries of the black metal genre.
