None of the 5 members are strangers to one another, having met before in bands such as In The Woods... and Strange New Dawn. We guarantee that the members regard “Omnio” pretty highly. Enough to revere it though? The similarity is not likely to be incidental, and anyway proves fleeting in the context of the 8 songs on “Mournigstar”, this new union turning out very creative in shaping their Black Metal with a variety of elements. Primarily, the vocals set Nattehimmel apart from many other acts of this nature by including a variety of tropes from harsh growls to monkish groans to undead rasps, plus other backing parts that overlay the slightly echoey production with a ton of resonance. These come from James Fogarty, who, along with the Botteri brothers, could be thought to bring a slight doom influence to otherwise identifiable next wave Black Metal, as comes out in the crashing low-paced riff kicking off ‘Mountain of the Northern Kings’ sort of like Isole or other epically touched acts. Nattehimmel prove unafraid to lay off the heaviness on that song too, letting the keyboards change to electronic sounds in the introduction and a repeated interlude that doesn’t shift the goalposts as far as you’d think. Furthermore, touches like the expressive solo in ‘Astrologer’ divorce “Mourningstar” from regular Black Metal assumptions, and one might expect little else from the diverse CVs of this group. With members of such experience, Nattehimmel would have to be silly to mess things up, yet one does not expect to be so impressed by the concoction boiling in this Norwegian cauldron. Despite the very pretty nature of some melodic guitar and the lush keys that serve multiple purposes, the riffs lift every song to stateliness despite not having many apiece, while the vocal styles have been judged well enough to smother this cake with icing. The sheer ferocity of these guys is enough to convince you why they were considered the fastest Heavy Metal band in the underground. So what is it that makes this record worthy of being called an underground classic? Right from production to musicianship, the concoction of several different ideas results into one colossal and inevitably unique style of their own. Many of you would probably wonder that there might just be a natural leaning towards sloppy playing especially considering my description of their astoundingly fast nature earlier. But the major surprise here is that all the musicians are extremely tight and precise with no single riff, solo or beat falling out of place. Tito Matos is one of the most versatile Thrash singers one has ever heard till date. His clarity of words and ability to keep up with the rest of the band with his lightning fast singing is simply commendable. The songs in here are all ridiculously speedy pieces of Thrash Metal with practically little or no remorse for the listener. The title track with that brilliant rendition of the famously eerie “Jaws” theme kicks off the onslaught with a tearing main riff that shreds away with speed and precision. Teutonic, Bay Area and a few east coast Thrash Metal bands have been instrumental in forging the whole genre altogether but taking the intensity a couple of notches higher was undoubtedly achieved by bands like Cryptic Slaughter, Soothsayer and finally Wehrmacht. For a year that was 1987, “Shark Attack” was way ahead of its time and has been highly regarded as the release that influenced many a band in the Grindcore and Black Metal genres. To testify this statement of mine, U.K Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death have covered Wehrmacht on one of their studio compilations, thus proving the exemplary effect this band had in the years to come. Yet the irony still stands out as to why only the most devoted of Thrash Metal\/Crossover freaks know about this band. To some fans this rendered the album with much\u003cbr\u003eless intensity, but to our ears the sound was still very powerful.\u003cbr\u003eThe massive reverb used on the first album made “Shark Attack” sound like a true shark attack and only added to the overall intensity. This\u003cbr\u003etime around the drums are more compressed and some blast beat parts tend to get lost in the overall blur of things. But on the same token,\u003cbr\u003ethe guitars are much sharper sounding. Marco Zorich and John Duffy were truly evolving as guitar heroes.\u003cbr\u003eThe thing that is really great and different compared to “Shark Attack” are the funny bit songs. We love them and enjoy them. A lot of the\u003cbr\u003esongs on “Biermächt” were leftovers from their demo days, including the phenomenal “Night Of Pain”, one of our all time favorite Thrash\u003cbr\u003esongs ever, but newer stuff like “Radical Dissection” and “Balance Of Opinion” showed the band handling a more mainstream Thrash\u003cbr\u003esound somewhere in the middle of a Slayer\/Kreator sound and Metallica\/Megadeth. There is a certain progressiveness to those songs that\u003cbr\u003ehint to a more elaborate musical future.\u003cbr\u003e“Biermächt” is a very strong Crossover\/Thrash album with a laid back party vibe to it. The sound, however, is very in-your-face. This is not\u003cbr\u003ea subtle album by any means.\u003cbr\u003eIt’s not that they were the funniest bunch around (their side project Spazztic Blurr went a lot further). But Wehrmacht did have their own\u003cbr\u003especific sound (mostly because of the vocals and guitars). Especially after all these years it becomes obvious all Crossover lovers and Thrashers from\u003cbr\u003ethose days do in fact have this album and hold it dearly. The album has historic importance as well as huge sentimental value. Released in mid-1988, “Biermächt” featured a slightly cleaner production than the one found on their debut album. To some fans this rendered the album with much less intensity, but to our ears the sound was still very powerful. The massive reverb used on the first album made “Shark Attack” sound like a true shark attack and only added to the overall intensity. This time around the drums are more compressed and some blast beat parts tend to get lost in the overall blur of things. But on the same token, the guitars are much sharper sounding. Marco Zorich and John Duffy were truly evolving as guitar heroes. The thing that is really great and different compared to “Shark Attack” are the funny bit songs. We love them and enjoy them. A lot of the songs on “Biermächt” were leftovers from their demo days, including the phenomenal “Night Of Pain”, one of our all time favorite Thrash songs ever, but newer stuff like “Radical Dissection” and “Balance Of Opinion” showed the band handling a more mainstream Thrash sound somewhere in the middle of a Slayer\/Kreator sound and Metallica\/Megadeth. There is a certain progressiveness to those songs that hint to a more elaborate musical future. “Biermächt” is a very strong Crossover\/Thrash album with a laid back party vibe to it. The sound, however, is very in-your-face. This is not a subtle album by any means. It’s not that they were the funniest bunch around (their side project Spazztic Blurr went a lot further). But Wehrmacht did have their own specific sound (mostly because of the vocals and guitars). Especially after all these years it becomes obvious all Crossover lovers and Thrashers from those days do in fact have this album and hold it dearly. The album has historic importance as well as huge sentimental value. Witkin’s work is suitably repulsive, but with enough artistry to elevate it above the legions of goregrind covers created.\u003cbr\u003eMusically, there’s an undercurrent of Rock. Unlike Death ‘N’ Roll bands (such as Pungent Stench became on their subsequent album) who make rock music with Death Metal\u003cbr\u003etrappings, “Been Caught Buttering” bends and contorts rock to fit within its twisted framework. Just as the cover takes a familiar and innocent image and perverts it into something\u003cbr\u003edreadful, the band employ well-worn tropes to devious ends.\u003cbr\u003eThe Pungent Stench discography is very diverse in its quality. There are other high points, but none to match this, not that one could reasonably expect a band to attain this\u003cbr\u003equality once, let alone multiple times. Despite the presence of the effectively straightforward 4 minute opener “Essence of Existence, much of the material seeks a share of complexity. With an average over 5 minutes per song, a fair amount of structural fiddling takes place, as well as numerous touches that promote interest over lengthy periods of listening. Mixed and mastered once again by the sound wizard Lawrence Mackrory. Sarcasm is a 4-piece band these days, due to time constraints Anders no longer will be a recording member but still be with the band as a live member from now on. Since the resurrection, only one of the former members has remained in the line-up, being vocalist Heval Bozarslan.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHeval, who once again exploring other-worldly topics, actually doesn’t want credit for the lyrics. According to him, the words instead were channeled to him from a higher force where answers to 8 different topics were given. Ethereal and metaphysical lyrics are not new to this band, but this time they are less metaphorical. We all love how Hooded Menace\u003cbr\u003ecombines heavy, Doomy riffage with that gloomy, horror atmosphere and some melody. And of course their Doom is strongly infected with\u003cbr\u003eold school Death Metal, so this is also why the music of Hooded Menace speaks to many of you so well. Later there’s some stuff from the\u003cbr\u003esplit with Anima Morte, splits with Coffins, Asphyx and Ilsa.\u003cbr\u003eAll in all, we have to say that “Gloom Immemorial” is a fantastic compilation of rare stuff from one of the best Doom\/Death Metal bands\u003cbr\u003eever. We would love to have them all as originals, as playing such music in vinyl format is simply pure magic and it always give you a\u003cbr\u003especial feeling, but if you cannot have what you want, you will be very happy with this substitute. The band and the label took it all seriously\u003cbr\u003eand came up with a fantastic booklet, which shows you each original release in details – with lyrics, original artwork and band photographs\u003cbr\u003efrom that era.
