More than three decades since their formation on the southwest coast of Norway, Borknagar remain a constantly evolving force. Starting with their self-titled beginnings, the band quickly pushed past the boundaries set by traditional black metal by encompassing prog, neofolk and hard rock. Though a season of change would soon follow, their tenth album remains a true force of nature.
Like the wind blowing in from the North Sea, Winter Thrice is powered by changes to Borknagar’s internal pressure system. The band’s vocal trifecta – Vintersorg, ICS Vortex (Arcturus, ex-Dimmu Borgir), and Lazare (Solefald) – shine cleaner and harsher alongside Garm of Ulver on the album’s title track. With blinding blast beats and melodies as crisp as the first frost, the song’s video has climbed to more than 2 million views on YouTube.
While their last album with Vintersorg and long-time guitarist Jens F. Ryland, Winter Thrice still stands as a peak in Borknagar’s discography. The album charted on the Finnish, Swiss and U.S. charts, peaking at #15 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums. “Winter Thrice represents perhaps more distinct incarnations of the band at one time than ever before”, No Clean Singing wrote, “reaching right back to their earliest days, while still forging boldly progressively forward”.
On Winter Thrice, Borknagar summoned a perfect storm of blackened progressive metal.
